Eugenol
Description
Provisional restorative material (combined with other materials).
Eugenol is obtained from Clove Oil. It is a light yellow liquid. Eugenol is used in reaction with Zinc Oxide in various dental procedures, such as protection of the dentin-pulp complex (lining), anodyne dressing to aid recovery of inflamed pulp, provisional restorations, root canal obturation, temporary or permanent cementation of inlays, crowns or fixed bridges, and surgical cements.
Eugenol darkens and thickens upon exposure to air. It has a clove scent and is practically insoluble in water. Soluble in alcohol, chloroform, ether, and oils. It has an anodyne (soothing) action on the pulp, which is why it is widely used as a temporary dressing for restorations.
It has analgesic, antiseptic, balsamic, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties.
